Brenna Huggins, from Mukilteo, Wash., is the Team Leader for Oak 1 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on January 8, 2013, to start her 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 1 is made up of 11 people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 4 is currently at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum in Madison, Wis., helping remove invasive species and doing other horticultural projects. The team arrived on March 11 and will stay until April 26.
Oak 4’s first accomplishment on the property was the removal of invasive trees, like buckthorn and honeysuckle, at Teal Pond.
ROGER UTHOFF, HONOR FLIGHTS - April 2nd, 2013 10:42 am

Rockwell Collins made a generous donation to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight of $25,000. Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will have two flights this spring on April 23 and May 21 thanks to many private donations. The May flight will be the Rockwell Collins flight. They have made contributions each year for the last three years. Thank you Rockwell Collins for being such a generous donor.

Sergio Tundo of Wayne, N.J., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 1 at the Vinton Campus. He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to do some good in the world while taking a break from school. Community service has been a driving force in his life since middle school where he was active in the youth division of the Lions Club and organized his high school’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life events.

Maple 4 is an AmeriCorps NCCC team made up of eleven members hailing from all over the country. Maple 4’s first project is with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank (NEIFB) in Waterloo. The team continues to live at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton and commutes to Waterloo.
NEIFB requested a NCCC team because the organization is moving to a new facility in a few weeks and need assistance with this move.

Calvin Landrum, from Waco, Texas, is the Team Leader for Oak 7 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on January 8, 2013, to start his 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 7 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

On Wednesday, Reps. Dawn Pettengill (R-Mt. Auburn) and Dave Maxwell (R-Gibson) hosted Doug Martin from Wendling Quarries, Inc. at the State Capitol. Martin is a member of the Associated General Contractors.

Naomi is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 3 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to take a year off from school to have an adventure and meet like-minded people.

On March 13, AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 7 started work at a thrift shop managed by Family Pathways. There were a series of tasks assigned to them, the first of which was to dismantle the North Branch bookstore and load its books and shelves into a truck, then reassemble the shelves at the Forest Lakes thrift shop.

The NCCC team of Oak 6 from the Vinton campus is in the heart of New York City, assisting the American Red Cross with giving financial assistance to those who have survived Hurricane Sandy. For their first project, the team is outside of their North Central Region, staying in Manhattan while working in Hell’s Kitchen for three weeks.
